Innovation in optical 3D scanning and reconstruction of real world objects: this is the goal of the Polygon Technology GmbH.

Polygon Technology GmbH Darmstadt was founded in september 2001 as a spin-off company of the Fraunhofer-Instituts für Graphische Datenverarbeitung and INI-GraphicsNet.

The company is manufacturer of a complete system for 3D digitalization of real world objects and the calculation of detailed computer models out of the measured point clouds.

The company's founder, Dr.-Ing. Peter J. Neugebauer, worked for the Fraunhofer-Instituts für Graphische Datenverarbeitung and developed the QTSculptor system there.

The idea

In the area of model and mold design, dental treatment and the optimization of workpiece geometry, very often digital 3D models of real form prototypes are needed to digitalize original models, produce copy models with rapid prototyping methods, visualize the appearance for different materials or optimize the form of the model using numerical algorithms.

With the prototype QTSculptor, a base system has been developed at the Fraunhofer-IGD that makes it possible to scan real objects or form prototypes and reconstruct them using multiple view integration.

Polygon Technology GmbH has developed the base system to a full-grown software product and is owner of the rights of QTSculptor.

Using this systems facilitates the reconstruction of model forms substantially. The conventional and costly single-point measurement followed by point reduction into a CAD dataset performed by an expert can be essentially accelerated and facilitated by using the new system.
Even bigger is the advantage of the new system in comparison with graphical computer modeling tools. The modeling of real objects by hand to a 100% recognition is practically not possible.

With QTSculptor even users with less routine in CAD can generate high-quality 3D-Images of real objects with ease.
